Does Shopify Have Built-In Inventory Management?

Short answer: Yes. Shopify ships with built-in inventory management on every plan. You can track stock per variant, per location, and per SKU without installing anything. For most early-stage stores it's enough. Once you start restocking from suppliers regularly, you'll bump into limits worth knowing about.

What Shopify's built-in inventory does

What's missing — the gaps merchants hit

1. No supplier-invoice parsing. Shopify can't read a PDF or Excel file from your supplier. You map columns to its CSV template by hand, every time.

2. No weighted-average cost tracking. Shopify stores a single cost-per-item field. When a supplier raises prices, you either overwrite the old cost or your COGS gets fuzzy. There's no built-in WAC calculation.

3. Purchase orders are basic. Stocky (Shopify's PO app) exists but is only free with POS Pro and expects you to build POs by hand inside it.

4. No auto-matching of supplier SKUs. If your supplier uses a different SKU code than you do, every line item is a manual search-and-update.

When you've outgrown the built-in tools

If you spend more than 30 minutes a week typing supplier data into Shopify, you've outgrown the built-in inventory management. The fastest fix is a Shopify app that parses supplier invoices and pushes inventory adjustments for you.

Smart Restock is built for exactly this. Drop in a PDF, Excel file, or forwarded email; it extracts the line items, matches them to your Shopify SKUs, updates weighted-average cost, and posts the adjustment to the right location.
